HAMPTON SKATEBOARD PARK WRAP UP
On Saturday, November 4th, skateboarders of all ages and abilities made their way to the Hampton Skateboard Park to compete against one another and share the good times that skateboarding delivers. Upwards of 50 skateboarders came to compete and nearly 100 spectators, mostly local families, lined the park looking to get a glimpse of the action as it unfolded. The contest was hosted by Hampton Parks and Recreation and Pioneers Board Shop of North Hampton. It was sponsored by Nixon Watches, Vans Footwear, and Wally’s Pub.
The skateboarders were broken into two groups based on age and they competed in a skateboard bowl jam, a skateboard street jam, and two different “best trick” contests. The “jam” style format is very informal; there are no numbers to keep track of and no points to score. It mimics a regular skate session where everyone takes turns skating the feature. The judges for the event based the winner on the overall impression they made throughout the session.
The podiums for the event featured both local skateboarders from Hampton and skateboarders who traveled from as far as northern Vermont to compete. In the older division, Nick and Curren walked away with $150 each provided by Wally’s pub. In the younger division, Josh and Petey left with an assortment of prizes provided by Pioneers Board Shop, Nixon Watches, and Vans Footwear.
The contest was held on only the new concrete features that have been built over the past two years both through town appropriated funds and through private fundraising. The skateboard park is consistently one of the most used public facilities in Hampton and provides a great outlet for many local families to practice their craft. The Hampton Skateboard Park is a labor of love for myself and for many other local citizens. We plan to use the momentum we currently have to continue to improve and upgrade the park as well as hosting skateboard contests and family skateboard days at the Hampton Skateboard Park.
Special thanks go out to Rene Boudreau and Dyana Martin from Hampton Parks and Recreation, Brandon Halberstadt with Nixon Watches, Al Fleury from Wally’s Pub, Justin Villano from Vans Footwear and the crew from Pioneers Board Shop. Without these people the day would not have been the success it was. Lastly, thank you to all the residents of Hampton that support the Hampton Skateboard Park and skateboarding on the Seacoast.
