HELLO NORA VASCONCELLOS
It’s always a pleasure to catch up with the first lady of Pioneers and since I haven’t seen or heard from Nora I figured I would drop here a line a see what’s been going on… Turns out nothing out of the ordinary, just KILLING IT as usual…
Pioneers; Hey Nora, How’s life treating you?
Nora; Pretty good, I’m missing my guys back home but enjoying California and everything it has to offer.
You said so long to the East coast and set your sites on the West coast. What drove you to make the move and how’s it working out for you.
I was able to come out to Southern California a couple times last year. On my second trip out I just didn’t want to leave. I had realized it was not only where I wanted to be but, where I needed to be in order to do what I wanted with my skateboarding. So far I can’t say have any regrets.
So you’re set up in southern California now, where are you living, where you skating, and who are you spending your time with?
I’m renting down in south Orange County, right in between LA and San Diego. I’ve been skating the Van’s Combi and Etnies park mostly, some spots and stuff in the area as well… the places to skate are endless and there are always good sessions going on.
You recently competed in the Women’s Combi Classic at the Vans skatepark. Tell everyone how that went….
It went extremely well, especially considering the circumstances. The Saturday before the contest I was skating and got a concussion in the bowl. It was a really stressful week and I was taking it day by day, hour by hour… determining whether or not I could skate in the event. On the day of the contest I was in this place of just getting through the day and being safe, I had to skate… I had come way too far not to. I was so surprised to end up in first in the end, everyone was skating so well and the overall energy of the day was incredible.
Would you consider this one of your biggest accomplishments, maybe even a mission accomplished?
I would definitely say so! It’s always one thing to be told what you are capable of, but it’s a whole other thing to actually go out and do it.
I’m sorry about this one but I have to ask… Do you regret not taking your helmet and pads off for all the award photos?
Ok, ok let me explain. At this point of the day I was just relieved to have skated and I had not anticipated I would be going up to the podium, never mind to accept first place. Obviously I wish I had taken them off, but at that point it was the last thing on my mind.
I’ve heard rumors and whispers in the wind about an all skater girl TV show…. care to comment on that?
I’m not sure of any show, there are always things coming up and the ladies of skateboarding are getting a lot of attention lately. I’ve been fortunate enough to join the MAHFIA.TV crew since moving out here. We have some cool stuff in the works as well as weekly edits you can find at MAHFIA.TV.
You’ve got a new job and a new sponsor right? Tell us about that!
I’ve been working at Welcome skateboards since December and now I’m honored to be riding their boards. There’s not too much to tell other then it is possibly the best job ever and I’m extremely fortunate.
When can we expect to see a Nora Vasconcellos pro model and will there be cats on it?
Haha, not sure but there’s no rush. As for the cats… expect many.
So any plans or goals for 2013?
I’m just going to try to continue to push my skateboarding on all levels… filming, contests, travel. I want to make time to surf and work on some art endeavors as well. Overall I’m just going to continue to work hard and really enjoy each day, I think it’s going to be a great year!
I know it will be, good chatting with you!!!
